BIOGRAPHIES

(L-R) Mitch Cox, Bernie Cox, Johnny Vickers, Monty Cox, Norman Cox
(Front) Mark Cox

Mark Cox Racing is both a professional and a family effort. Mark's brothers, Monty and Mitch, and father, Norman, are an integral part of the team. Cox also brought Hawaya Racing's Johnny Vickers on board in 2000 to spearhead the technological advances the team has made. Undeniably one of the best wrenches in the business, Bernie Lee, rounds out the first-class Mark Cox Racing Top Fuel Harley Drag Racing Team.
Mitch Cox

A lifetime resident of North Carolina, Mitch grew up in Walnut Cove, and is currently living in Winston-Salem NC, along with his wife Mary. Mitch graduated from North Carolina State University in 1989 and worked for Sports Marketing Enterprises of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he managed the NASCAR Winston West and Winston Cup Series programs. In 2004, Mitch joined Crossroads Harley-Davidson as a Managing Partner.
Mitch has been a staunch supporter of Mark's racing career since 1985 and an integral part of Mark's auto racing career, serving as general mechanic, gasman, and tire specialist. Joining Mark Cox Racing's AHDRA effort on a limited basis in 1997, less business travel has enabled Mitch to significantly increase his contribution to the team in 2000 and beyond. Mitch is also and avid mountain biker and competes in selected races each year.

Monty Cox

A native of North Carolina, Monty is a twin of Mitch, both younger brothers to Mark. He joined Mark Cox Racing in 1997 and his duties include general maintenance and Stage Man. After working with Mark for eight years in stock car racing as a Jack Man and handling general maintenance chores, Monty and Mark have a rhythm only brothers can share.
Monty has worked for Timco for a decade doing aviation maintenance. He enjoys running, mountain biking and playing golf in his spare time.

Norman Cox

Born in Pennsylvania, Norman grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and married Martha in 1958. A father of four children, three boys and one girl, Mark was the first-born. Norman spent four years in the USMC before joining D.D. Bean & Sons in 1959, retiring in 1992.
Norman’s love for motorcycles came early, buying his first Harley in 1959, a 1958 74 ci Pan. He started competing in hill climbs about 1965, winning plenty of local races. He also tried his hand at flat track racing with little success.
His motorcycle interest carried over to his son, Mark, who started motocross and outlaw flat track racing at an early age. Since then, Norman has been involved as Mark’s crew and biggest fan, with AHDRA being one of his biggest thrills.

Bernie Lee

Born in Eastport, Maine and schooled in Connecticut, Bernie Lee enlisted in the U.S. Marines as a young man. He served two tours in Vietnam from 1967-69 and was discharged in April of 1970 with the rank of Sergeant.
Bernie spent the next eight years traveling the U.S., working jobs from journeyman production mechanic to the oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico. He married his former wife and still best friend, Patricia, in 1979 and they have three children, one daughter and two sons.
Bernie bought his first Harley in 1972 and has been hooked ever since. After a serious industrial accident in 1988, he decided to pursue his real interest, Harley-Davidsons. He attended M.M.I. in Orlando and graduated second in his class, soon embarking on a Harley career at Lyall Harley-Davidson in Wilkesboro, NC in 1991, until Crossroads bought the franchise in 1994. Having started as a Line Technician, Bernie worked his way up to his current position of Shop Foreman.
Mark Cox offered him the opportunity to become involved with the race team in 1996 and Bernie has been an integral part of the team ever since. In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious “AHDRA Wrench of the Year Award”. Bernie hopes to maintain his many wonderful racing relationships long after he retires.

Johnny Vickers

A native of Baton Rouge, LA, Johnny is the most recent member to join the Mark Cox Racing team. As Owner/President of Hawaya Racing, Inc., they specialize in research, development and manufacturing of drag racing parts and safety equipment for Harley-Davidson drag bikes. His company also provides high performance parts and service for street Harleys.

An original member of the AHDRA Top Fuel 4-second club, Johnny has numerous past national and world records as a competitor. Johnny and his Hawaya Racing took on the awesome task of building the new Mark Cox Racing Top Fuel bike for competition this season. In 2007, Johnny plans to move his entire Hawaya Racing operation to Wilkesboro, NC, which will also house the future racing efforts of Mark Cox Racing.
